Themes Explored: Reclaiming the queerness in Latinx culture from colonial and Catholic ideals

Indigenous cultures of the Americas in pre-Columbian civilizations made space for and often exalted LGBTQ+ individuals. With the arrival of colonial forces from England, Spain, the Netherlands, and other European nations, Catholic ideals were forced upon local tribes, forever altering the relationship of queerness to Latinx culture.

Both Flavia and Hernán center this narrative in elements of their work to try and redefine the relationships that exist between the queer community and Latinx culture at-large. Listen below to excerpts to hear them talk about how this manifests.
